Today, in the traditional (1962) Roman calendar, the Church celebrates the feast of St. Joseph Calasanz, Confessor. Born in Aragon, Spain, in the mid-16th century, Joseph Calasanz devoted his life to the education of poor children and to the reform of Christian schooling. After his ordination to the priesthood, he moved to Rome, where he was deeply moved by the plight of the city’s destitute youth, many of whom had no access to schools or catechesis. Moved by evangelical charity, Calasanz founded the first free public school in Europe in 1597, planting the seeds of what would become the Congregation of the Poor Clerks Regular of the Mother of God of the Pious Schools—commonly known as the Piarists.
His approach unified secular learning with spiritual formation, insisting that the poor needed both instruction in faith and literacy to live full Christian lives. Calasanz’s work faced opposition and many trials—both within the Church and from civil authorities. Nevertheless, his institute was eventually approved by the Holy See. He is honored today as the patron saint of Christian popular schools and of teachers of youth. The traditional calendar keeps his feast on August 27, marking his memory as a confessor and educator, and offering a model of deep trust in Divine Providence and great love for the young and neglected. This III class feast highlights not only his sanctity but the enduring value the Church places on the charitable mission of Catholic education.
