Today, according to the traditional (1962) Roman calendar, is the commemoration of Our Lady on Saturday, known in Latin as 'Sanctæ Mariæ Sabbato.' This is not a fixed feast specific to July 11th, but rather a recurring observance permitted on Saturdays throughout the year when no other feast of higher rank is celebrated. The custom of dedicating Saturday to the Blessed Virgin Mary dates back many centuries in Western Christianity. It reflects deep devotion to Mary as the Mother of God and the model of Christian discipleship. The roots of this observance can be traced to the early medieval period, where the faithful would honor Mary on Saturdays in remembrance of her steadfast hope and faith on Holy Saturday, the day Christ lay in the tomb. The Mass celebrated in her honor on Saturdays, particularly when there is no conflicting feast, is an expression of the affection, gratitude, and veneration Christians have for the Blessed Virgin. Saturdays thus become a privileged day for asking her intercession and meditating on her example of fidelity, humility, and maternal care. The traditional calendar maintains this practice to foster Marian devotion more personally and regularly among the faithful, giving them an opportunity to approach the Mother of God with their prayers and needs, especially in the quieter rhythm of the liturgical week. Since today, July 11th, in 2026 falls on a Saturday without another feast of higher rank, the Mass of Our Lady on Saturday is preserved by the 1962 calendar in rank IV (Simple level), highlighting its devotional character within the ongoing celebration of the Church’s liturgical cycle.
