Today, according to the traditional (1962) Roman calendar, the Church commemorates St. Bonaventure, Bishop, Confessor, and Doctor of the Church. St. Bonaventure was born around 1217 in Bagnoregio, Italy, and became one of the most eminent Franciscan theologians and spiritual writers of the 13th century. Entering the Franciscan Order as a young man, he studied at the University of Paris, eventually earning his doctorate alongside St. Thomas Aquinas. Bonaventure became Minister General of the Franciscans, helping to guide and unify the Order during a time of internal challenges following the death of St. Francis of Assisi. His reputation for wisdom, humility, and deep charity earned him the title “Seraphic Doctor.” Chosen as Cardinal Bishop of Albano, he continued to serve the Church faithfully until his death in 1274 at the Council of Lyons.
Renowned not only for his administrative gifts but also for his theological and devotional works—such as the 'Journey of the Soul to God' and his 'Life of St. Francis'—Bonaventure emphasized the harmony of faith and reason and the importance of a loving union with God through contemplation. His spirituality deeply influenced Franciscan piety and broader Catholic tradition. The traditional calendar keeps his feast on July 14th to mark his holy death during the Council of Lyons and to honor his enduring legacy as a guide for souls seeking to grow in charity and knowledge of God. Classified as a III class feast, his memory today invites the faithful to imitate his interiority, charity, and devotion to Christ and the Church.
