Commemoration : Our Lady of Mount Carmel
Today, according to the traditional (1962) Roman calendar, the Church observes a "feria," specifically Thursday after the Seventh Sunday after Pentecost, known in Latin as "Feria quinta infra Hebdomadam VII post Octavam Pentecostes." A feria is a weekday that bears no special feast or memorial, and the liturgy is drawn from the texts assigned for the Mass of the previous Sunday or otherwise follows the propers of the season. In this period after Pentecost, the Church continues to draw spiritual nourishment from the mysteries of the Holy Ghost’s descent and the growth of the Church. Ferias of this sort give space to the faithful to meditate on the teachings and themes emphasized after Pentecost, especially Christian virtue, the fruits of the Spirit, and fidelity to God’s law. The liturgical colour is green, symbolizing hope and the ongoing spiritual life of the Church. The 1962 Roman calendar preserves such ferias as days for ordinary liturgical prayer, unless a higher-ranking feast occurs. Thus, today is marked by the sober continuity of the liturgical year and the spiritual rhythm it encourages.
