Today the traditional (1962) Roman calendar observes the feast of St. Jerome Emiliani, Confessor. St. Jerome Emiliani (Italian: Gerolamo Emiliani), born around 1486 in Venice, is especially remembered as the founder of the Clerics Regular of Somasca and as a devoted protector of orphans and the poor. Originally a soldier and magistrate, he experienced a dramatic conversion after being taken prisoner in war and attributing his miraculous escape to the intercession of the Blessed Virgin Mary. Subsequently, he dedicated his life and fortune to works of charity, focusing particularly on the needs of abandoned children, orphans, and victims of plague and famine in northern Italy during the turbulent early 16th century. St. Jerome organized homes and networks for orphans and founded a religious congregation—the Somascan Fathers—in Somasca, near Bergamo, that would carry on his charitable mission and spiritual ideals.
The Church venerates him as a model of practical Christian charity and perseverance, emphasizing corporal works of mercy and a life of penance. His care for the vulnerable and marginalized reflects Catholic teaching on the dignity of every person and the importance of charity as an expression of faith. Canonized in 1767 by Pope Clement XIII, St. Jerome Emiliani was later declared patron of orphans and abandoned children by Pope Pius XI. The feast of St. Jerome Emiliani was added to the universal calendar in the 20th century, and it is kept on July 20 in the traditional Roman Rite at the rank of III Class, reflecting his importance as a model for lay and religious Christians alike.
