Today, according to the traditional (1962) Roman calendar, the Church commemorates St. Apollinaris, Bishop and Martyr. St. Apollinaris is venerated as one of the earliest bishops of Ravenna, often regarded as a disciple of the Apostle St. Peter, who is said to have ordained him and sent him to evangelize the region. While precise details of his life are shrouded in the mists of early Christian history and intermixed with legend, strong tradition maintains that Apollinaris zealously spread the faith among the pagans of northern Italy, enduring numerous persecutions and hardships for his missionary fervor. His courageous witness to Christ in the face of repeated banishments, beatings, and eventual martyrdom steadfastly exemplifies the virtues of pastoral charity and apostolic endurance. The choice of this feast in the traditional calendar highlights the importance of early martyrs and bishops who helped ground the faith in their communities, and whose blood became, as Tertullian said, the seed of Christians. His feast’s ranking as III class reflects his regional significance and the antiquity of his cult, especially in Ravenna, which venerates St. Apollinaris as a patron. The Roman liturgy commemorates him today to inspire the faithful with the example of apostolic zeal and perseverance in the face of suffering, central values to the life of the Church from its very foundation.
