Today is a 'ferial' day in the liturgical calendar, meaning there is no specific saint or feast assigned, and the Church marks the Ordinary Time of the year. Ordinary Time, comprising the weeks outside of Advent, Christmas, Lent, and Easter seasons, focuses on the everyday life and teachings of Jesus Christ. “This wicked people will become like this belt that is useless” — Jr 13, 1-11

This is what the Lord spoke to me:
“Go, buy yourself a linen belt
and put it on your waist.
Do not let it touch water.”
   According to the word of the Lord, I bought a belt
and put it on my waist.
   Again, the word of the Lord was addressed to me:
   “With the belt you bought
and are wearing around your waist,
get up, go to the Euphrates River,
and there hide it in a crack in a rock.”
   So I went and hid it by the Euphrates, just as the Lord had ordered me.
   A long time later, the Lord said to me:
“Get up, go to the Euphrates, and take back the belt
that I ordered you to hide there.”
   So I went to the Euphrates, I dug, and I took back the belt from the place where I had hidden it.
And look: the belt was ruined, useless!

    Then the word of the Lord was addressed to me:
“This is what the Lord says:
This is how I will ruin
the great pride of Judah and Jerusalem.
   This wicked people,
who follow the inclinations of their hardened hearts
and who walk after other gods,
to serve them and bow down before them,
they will become like this belt
that is useless.
   Indeed, just as a man binds a belt around his waist,
so I bound the whole house of Israel
and the whole house of Judah – oracle of the Lord – so that they would be my people, my renown, my praise and my splendour. But they would not listen!”

Dt 32, 18-19, 20, 21

You disregard the Rock who gave you birth;
the God who fathered you, you forget.
The Lord saw it: he rejected
his sons and his daughters who provoked him.

He said: “I will hide my face from them
and see what their end will be.
Yes, they are a perverse generation, children without faith.

“They made me jealous with what is not a god,
provoked me with their worthless idols;
I in turn will make them jealous
by a people who are not a people, I will provoke them by a foolish nation.”

“The kingdom of Heaven is like a mustard seed, so that the birds of the air come and make nests in its branches” — Mt 13, 31-35

At that time,
   Jesus offered another parable to the crowds:
“The kingdom of Heaven is like a mustard seed which a man took and sowed in his field.
   It is the smallest of all the seeds, but when it has grown, it surpasses all the other garden plants and becomes a tree, so that the birds of the air come and make their nests in its branches.”
   He told them another parable:
“The kingdom of Heaven is like yeast that a woman took and mixed into three measures of flour, until the whole batch was leavened.”

Jesus spoke all these things to the crowds in parables, and he spoke to them only in parables, thus fulfilling the word of the prophet:
I will open my mouth in parables,
I will proclaim what has been hidden since the foundation of the world.
