Saturday of the 5th Week after Pentecost
Today, according to the traditional (1962) Roman calendar, is observed as the commemoration of the Blessed Virgin Mary on Saturday, known as 'Our Lady on Saturday.' This devotion developed in the Middle Ages, as a way of honoring the Mother of God with a special weekly remembrance outside of her principal feasts. Saturday was chosen because early Christians came to associate it with the day Mary persevered in faith and hope after Christ’s burial and before His Resurrection—the first Holy Saturday, when only she held perfect faith in the promise of her Son. Over centuries, popes and liturgical tradition gave form to Saturday Masses in honor of Our Lady, with particular prayers and readings emphasizing her role as the Mother of the Redeemer and intercessor for Christians. In the 1962 calendar, the Saturday Mass of the Blessed Virgin Mary is kept as a fourth class (simple) observance when there is no greater feast assigned, especially in the period following Pentecost, as an expression of Marian devotion in the liturgical rhythm of the Church. It encourages the faithful to turn to Mary with filial love and to ponder her steadfast faith, especially on the weekdays outside major feast days. This commemoration reflects the Church’s desire to hold up the Blessed Mother as a model of constant faith, humility, and loving obedience.
