Commemoration of Saints Tryphon, Respicius and Saint Nympha, Virgin, Martyrs
Saint Andrew Avellino, honored today as a confessor, is venerated for his profound spiritual discipline and dedication to reform within the Church. Born in the Kingdom of Naples in the early 16th century, he initially pursued legal studies before turning more deeply to the service of God. After his ordination, he quickly gained a reputation for piety and was called to undertake the reform of a lax monastery where, through steadfastness and charity, he restored observance of religious rule. Andrew later became associated with the Theatine Order, a congregation dedicated to fostering reform in the clergy and a fervent life of prayer and apostolic work.
His life was marked by great austerity, humility, and concern for the spiritual renewal not only of religious communities but of the faithful at large. He exhibited extraordinary devotion to the Holy Eucharist and the Blessed Virgin Mary, and his spirit of penance and self-denial inspired many to greater holiness. Renowned as a wise confessor and spiritual director, he encouraged perseverance, warning against discouragement in the struggle against sin. His death occurred at the altar, a fitting testimony to a life wholly given in service to God.
Today’s commemoration asks the faithful to remember not only Andrew Avellino’s personal sanctity, but also his witness to conversion and spiritual renewal amidst the challenges of the post-Reformation Church. The observance of his feast on this date provides an opportunity for the faithful to emulate his zeal for the interior life and fidelity to Christ, especially in perseverance amid personal or ecclesial adversity.
