Today, according to the traditional 1962 Roman calendar, is the feast of St. Teresa of Avila, Virgin and Doctor of the Church. Born in Spain in 1515, Teresa entered the Carmelite Order, eventually reforming it in a spirit of greater austerity and fervor, and founding what became known as the Discalced (barefoot) Carmelites. Her life was marked by a deep devotion to prayer, mystical union with God, and her tireless reform efforts despite constant misunderstandings and physical ailments. Renowned for her writings—such as 'The Interior Castle' and 'The Way of Perfection'—St. Teresa’s teaching emphasizes the centrality of contemplative prayer and absolute trust in God’s will. The Church honors her as one of the most luminous figures of the Catholic Counter-Reformation, an exemplar of both practical leadership and profound mysticism. Her feast is observed on this day in the traditional calendar, reminding the faithful of her enduring legacy as a spiritual mother, a reformer, and an inspiration to all those who seek union with Christ, especially through a life of prayer. This rank of III class in the traditional calendar highlights her importance without overshadowing the ongoing rhythms of the liturgical year. It is the feast as kept by the traditional (1962) Roman calendar.
