On October 28th, the traditional (1962) Roman calendar celebrates the feast of Saints Simon and Jude, two of the Twelve Apostles chosen personally by Our Lord Jesus Christ. Saint Simon, also known as Simon the Zealot, is sometimes identified with Simon the Canaanite in the Gospels, a title indicating his zealous commitment to the Jewish Law before his conversion. Saint Jude, also called Thaddaeus, is distinguished from Judas Iscariot and is remembered for his epistle in the New Testament, in which he exhorts the faithful to persevere amid error and apostasy. Very few historical details about their lives and apostolic missions are known with certainty, but tradition associates the two apostles with missionary work in the East, possibly in Persia, Mesopotamia, or Armenia, where they are said to have suffered martyrdom — likely together. The Church honors their zeal, courage, and fidelity in spreading the Gospel to distant lands, enduring persecution, and finally giving their lives for Christ. This joint feast underscores the unity of the apostolic mission and the universality of the Gospel, both essential themes as the liturgical year draws toward its close and the Church reflects on the fulfillment of Christ's saving work through the ministry of the Apostles. Their commemoration as a Second Class feast (II. classis) in the traditional Roman rite highlights the importance of the apostolic foundation of the Church, the veneration owed to those who first preached the faith, and the connection of the faithful with the apostolic college.
The feast of Saints Simon and Jude has been kept on October 28th in Rome for many centuries, reflecting the dedication of a church in their honor and a very ancient Western tradition. The red liturgical color signifies their martyrdom and the testimony they gave through their blood.
