Commemoration of Saint Mark, Pope and Confessor
Today, according to the traditional 1962 Roman calendar, is the Feast of the Blessed Virgin Mary of the Rosary—a solemn memorial of the powerful intercession of Our Lady through the prayer of the holy Rosary. The dedication of this day stems from the historical victory at the Battle of Lepanto in 1571, when Christian forces, united under the banner of the Rosary, prevailed against the Ottoman navy; this miraculous event was attributed to the prayers of the faithful reciting the Rosary under Pope St. Pius V’s guidance. Established shortly after the victory as the feast of 'Our Lady of Victory,' it was soon renamed to honor the Rosary itself and extended to the Universal Church in recognition of the Rosary's central role in Catholic devotion and intercessory prayer. The Rosary, meditating on the life of Christ through Mary’s eyes, is upheld by the Church as a means of obtaining graces, deepening the mysteries of Christ’s life, and fostering perseverance in faith. The feast remains on October 7 as a durable reminder, in the traditional (1962) calendar, of the enduring spiritual power entrusted to the Church through Our Lady’s intercession, and it continues to inspire Catholics to frequent and prayerful recitation of the Rosary, especially in moments of trial and for the protection of the faith.
