Commemoration of Our Lady of Ransom
Today, according to the traditional Roman calendar of 1962 (Vetus Ordo Missae, Rubrics 1960), is a ferial day: Thursday after the 17th Sunday after Pentecost. Known as a 'feria,' which simply means weekday, this day is not set aside for the commemoration of any particular saint or mystery, but continues the liturgical journey through the Time after Pentecost, a period oriented toward spiritual growth and reflection on the teachings of Christ and the life of the Church following the coming of the Holy Spirit. During this period, the Church encourages the faithful to deepen their relationship with God in the ordinary circumstances of daily life. The liturgical color is green, symbolizing hope and the ongoing life of grace. Ferias of the fourth class, like today, are often replaced by any occurring feast of higher rank, but if not, the Mass and Office of the previous Sunday are typically used, connecting the faithful to the continuous rhythm of the liturgical year. The traditional Roman calendar thus regards such days as essential moments for regular prayer, Scripture, and spiritual discipline, even absent a proper feast.
