1st classDedication of Saint Michael the Archangel
Today, according to the traditional (1962) Roman calendar, the Church celebrates the feast of the Dedication of Saint Michael the Archangel—one of the principal liturgical commemorations devoted to the holy angels. This feast, established in the West as early as the fifth century, recalls the consecration of a basilica in honor of Saint Michael near Rome, on the Via Salaria, around the end of that century, though the historical details of the original dedication are uncertain. The rank of I. classis given to this feast in the traditional calendar reflects Saint Michael’s pivotal role in salvation history, both as the leader of the heavenly hosts against the rebellious angels and as a patron and protector of the Church. The liturgical focus of the day is not merely on a physical building, but on the enduring spiritual protection that Saint Michael affords God’s people. Spiritually, the Church invokes Saint Michael as a guardian against the snares of the devil, as manifested in both Scripture (especially in the Apocalypse) and Christian tradition. This day is marked with white vestments, honoring the purity and exalted office of the Archangel, and with solemn liturgical rites reflecting the importance of the angelic ministry in the divine plan. The traditional calendar preserves this feast on 29 September to consecrate the beginning of autumn to the Archangel’s guardianship and to recall the assistance of the holy angels throughout the liturgical year.
