Today, according to the traditional (1962) Roman calendar, the Church celebrates the feast of St. Pius X, Pope and Confessor, observed as a III class feast. Giuseppe Sarto, later known as Pope Pius X, was born in 1835 in Italy, and became renowned for his profound piety, humility, and pastoral zeal. Ascending to the papacy in 1903, Pius X labored for the renewal of all things in Christ ('Instaurare omnia in Christo'), greatly emphasizing the centrality of the Eucharist. He is especially remembered for encouraging frequent Holy Communion, lowering the age for First Communion, and promoting active participation in the liturgy. His resolute opposition to Modernism—an array of theological errors he called the 'synthesis of all heresies'—marked his pontificate as a time of doctrinal vigilance as well as spiritual renewal. St. Pius X deeply loved the traditions of the Church, reforming church music to restore Gregorian chant and defending Catholic doctrine with clarity and charity.
He died in 1914, shortly before the outbreak of the First World War, and was canonized in 1954, making him one of the few popes canonized in the modern era. The traditional feast, established after his canonization, honors his memory on September 3rd, commemorating his example as a humble shepherd and confessor of the faith. His spirituality, grounded in love for the Blessed Sacrament, simplicity, and fidelity to Christ, continues to inspire the faithful. The 1962 calendar places his celebration on this day to esteem his great contributions to Catholic life and doctrine, recognizing him as a model of papal holiness and reform.
