Today, in the traditional Roman calendar of 1962 (Vetus Ordo Missae), the Church commemorates St. Lawrence Justinian, Bishop and Confessor. Born in 1381 in Venice, Lawrence Justinian entered the Canons Regular of St. George in Alga and quickly became renowned for his fervent prayer, humility, and deep commitment to the episcopal and monastic reform movement of his era. His spiritual maturity was recognized when he was named the first Patriarch of Venice in 1451, a significant position reflecting both his leadership qualities and the trust placed in him by the Church. St. Lawrence tirelessly promoted holiness among the clergy and faithful, insisting on charity, penance, and the devout administration of the sacraments. He left behind numerous writings, inspired by Scripture and the Church Fathers, emphasizing humility, detachment from worldly things, and a contemplative life rooted in Christ. His sanctity was widely acclaimed by those who knew him, both in his zeal as a pastor and in his gentle manner with the poor and afflicted. He died in 1455, his life serving as a strong example of episcopal service and personal holiness. The traditional Roman calendar assigns his feast on September 5, honoring his memory with the rank of III Classis (Third Class Feast), inviting the faithful to imitate his love for Christ and the Church. This celebration underscores the traditional calendar’s commitment to preserving the memory of bishops who were luminous examples of Christian virtue, especially at times of challenge and renewal within the Church.
