Tuesday of the 10th Week after Pentecost
Today, according to the traditional (1962) Roman calendar, is the feast of St Dominic, Confessor. St Dominic was born in Caleruega, in Old Castile (present-day Spain), towards the end of the 12th century. He became a canon at Osma, noted for his rigorous asceticism and deep prayer life. In response to the challenges posed by the Albigensian heresy, Dominic gave himself to preaching and defending the Catholic faith, emphasizing poverty, prayer, and apostolic zeal. In 1216, he received papal approval for the Order of Preachers (the Dominicans), a religious family rooted in both contemplative prayer and dynamic preaching, which quickly spread throughout the Church. Dominic is renowned for fostering devotion to the Blessed Virgin Mary and is traditionally associated with the propagation of the Holy Rosary, though the precise historical details of this connection are debated.
His feast has long been observed in August, commemorating his death on August 6, 1221; but, to accommodate the feast of the Transfiguration on August 6, his memorial was placed on August 4 in the traditional calendar. The Church venerates him as a shining example of doctrinal integrity, missionary zeal, and love for Truth, qualities especially needed in times of confusion or heresy. The use of white liturgical vestments reflects his role as a confessor and founder, celebrating the light he brought to the Church. The memory of St Dominic, as kept in the 1962 calendar, encourages the faithful to seek holiness through study, prayer, and loving defense of the Catholic faith.
