St Mary of the Snows

Today, according to the traditional (1962) Roman calendar, the Church celebrates the feast of St Mary of the Snows (Sanctæ Mariæ Virginis ad Nives). This feast commemorates the Dedication of the Basilica of St Mary Major (Basilica Sanctae Mariae Maioris) in Rome, the principal Marian church of the West. The title 'Our Lady of the Snows' recalls a popular and ancient legend: in the fourth century, a Roman patrician and his wife, having no heirs, prayed for guidance on how best to use their wealth in honour of the Blessed Virgin Mary. During the night of 4–5 August, they and Pope Liberius were said to have had a vision in which Our Lady indicated, by a miraculous snowfall on the Esquiline Hill, where a basilica should be built. While the miraculous nature of the snowfall is legendary, the actual church, now the grand Basilica of St Mary Major, was indeed constructed in the early years of the Basilica's history, being dedicated by Pope Sixtus III after the Council of Ephesus (431), where Mary's title as Theotokos—Mother of God—was confirmed. This feast, originally celebrated as the "Dedicatio Sanctæ Mariæ ad Nives," highlights the Church's deep devotion to the Mother of God, her powerful intercession, and her pivotal place in the mystery of the Incarnation. It invites the faithful to contemplate Mary’s role in salvation history and to seek her maternal protection. The celebration of this dedication, and the memory of the miraculous snow, became a symbol of Mary's purity and of divine intervention, echoing through the centuries in Roman liturgy and devotion.
