St Cajetan, Confessor

Today, according to the traditional (1962) Roman calendar, the Church celebrates the feast of Saint Cajetan, Confessor. Born in 1480 in Vicenza, northern Italy, Cajetan (Gaetano dei Conti di Thiene) lived during the tumultuous period bridging the late Middle Ages and the dawn of the Catholic Reformation. Ordained a priest in 1516, he was deeply moved by the spiritual needs and widespread corruption that afflicted the Church of his era. In response, Saint Cajetan co-founded the Theatines (Clerics Regular of the Divine Providence) in 1524, a congregation dedicated both to the renewal of ecclesiastical life and to fostering holiness among the clergy. Through lives of poverty, rigorous prayer, and active charity, the Theatines sought to revive apostolic zeal and spiritual discipline.

Saint Cajetan was known for his profound trust in Divine Providence and his practical work aiding the poor and sick, emphasizing Christ-like service and confidence in God's merciful care. His vision anticipated aspects of the later reforms of the Council of Trent, as he promoted both interior holiness and external works of charity. On 7 August 1547 he died in Naples, where he spent much of his ministry and where his tomb became a center of veneration.

His feast was introduced into the general Roman calendar in the late 17th century and is kept on August 7, the date of his death, serving as a vivid reminder of the Church's perennial call to holiness and reform from within. By commemorating Saint Cajetan as a Confessor on this date and at the rank of III class, the traditional calendar highlights the enduring legacy of this saint as a restorer of ecclesiastical life and a model of trust in God amidst difficult times.
