Today, on the 1962 traditional Roman calendar, the Church celebrates the feast of St. John Mary Vianney, Confessor. Known as the Curé of Ars, St. John Vianney was born near Lyons, France, in 1786. He is revered as the patron saint of parish priests. Ordained in 1815 after overcoming many academic difficulties due to the aftermath of the Revolution, he was entrusted with the tiny parish of Ars in 1818. There, his profound humility, fervent prayer, and tireless dedication to hearing confessions soon attracted tens of thousands of pilgrims. St. John Vianney became renowned for his spiritual counsel, personal austerity, and miraculous insights into souls. His life exemplified priestly charity, a deep devotion to the Blessed Sacrament, and a heroic commitment to penance and intercession for sinners. The traditional Roman calendar keeps his feast on August 8th to honor his confessor’s virtues and enduring witness to priestly holiness at the heart of the Church's life. Instituted as a III classis feast, it calls clergy and faithful alike to imitate St. John Vianney’s humble fidelity and zeal for souls. His canonization in 1925 reflected the broad devotion already alive among the faithful. This is the feast according to the 1962 Roman calendar (Vetus Ordo Missae), which preserves the memory of this exemplary parish priest and model of the confessor on this day each year.
