Saint Didacus, known in Spanish as San Diego de Alcalá, was a humble Franciscan lay brother renowned for his simplicity, charity, and contemplative life. Born in the mid-15th century in Andalusia, Spain, Didacus entered the Franciscan Order as a lay brother rather than a priest, embracing a life of poverty and manual labor. He spent several years as a hermit before joining the friars, demonstrating a profound devotion to prayer and service to the poor. His sanctity became particularly evident during his time in the Canary Islands, where he zealously tended to both the spiritual and bodily needs of the sick. Later, he was stationed at the friary in Alcalá de Henares near Madrid, where his humility, patience, and miracles attracted the veneration of many. His reputation for miraculous healings was especially noted during a serious epidemic in Rome, where he served in the friary of Ara Coeli. Didacus died in 1463 and was canonized by Pope Sixtus V in 1588.
The commemoration of St Didacus as Confessor in the liturgical calendar reflects the Church’s recognition of the sanctity reached through ordinary, hidden, and humble lives wholly dedicated to God. His feast honors his spiritual legacy of charity, humility, and faithfulness in the midst of daily duties, providing a model for Christians to seek holiness in whatever state of life they are called. The liturgical rank of his feast and his celebration today highlight his widespread veneration in Spain and among the Franciscans, as well as the Church's emphasis on God's grace working through even the humblest of his servants.
