St Josaphat, Bishop and Martyr

St. Josaphat, Bishop and Martyr, is honored as a heroic figure in the history of the Eastern Catholic Churches. Born around the end of the sixteenth century in what is now Ukraine or Belarus, Josaphat embraced the monastic life as a member of the Basilian Order of St. Josaphat. His era was marked by religious tensions following the Union of Brest—in which part of the Orthodox hierarchy entered into communion with the Roman Pontiff, forming the Uniate Church (now called the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church). Josaphat, who became Archbishop of Polotsk, devoted his life to fostering unity between Eastern Christians and the Roman Church, upholding Eastern rites while supporting the union with Rome.

He faced fierce opposition, including from those within the Orthodox community who rejected the union. Despite threats and hostility, Josaphat remained committed to charity, reform, and the defense of his flock. His efforts ultimately cost him his life: he was violently martyred in 1623, becoming a symbol of faithful witness to Church unity. The Church honors him as a model of pastoral zeal, ecumenical commitment, and self-sacrificing charity. His feast is celebrated to remember both his martyrdom and his mission to heal divisions within Christendom, and as a testimony to the enduring call to unity in faith.
