Commemoration of Saint Theodore, Martyr
The feast of the Dedication of the Basilica of Saint John Lateran, honored on this day, celebrates the consecration of the mother church of all Christendom. The Lateran Basilica, dedicated to Christ the Savior (Ss. Salvatoris) and also to Saints John the Baptist and John the Evangelist, is the cathedral of the Bishop of Rome. Its original dedication dates back to the early fourth century, following the Emperor Constantine’s legalization of Christianity, when he gave the Lateran palace to Pope Melchiades, who then established it as the first public Christian church in Rome. Through successive centuries it has witnessed councils, synods, and the unfolding of Church history, standing as a visible sign of the unity and authority of the Roman Pontiff.
The feast is kept with special solemnity because the Lateran Basilica represents not simply one parish, but the entire Catholic Church's central point of unity; it is called the 'omnium urbis et orbis ecclesiarum mater et caput' – the mother and head of all the churches of Rome and the world. Liturgically, the celebration invites the faithful to give thanks for the gift of the Church herself and the spiritual reality signified by the temple built of living stones, the faithful in Christ. The dedication of a church, especially of such high dignity, reminds Christians of their vocation to be temples of the Holy Spirit and members of the Mystical Body of Christ, continually sanctified. This feast, once celebrated initially only in Rome, was extended to the whole Western Church to foster a deeper communion with the See of Peter and to commemorate the enduring mission of the Church established by Christ himself.
