Commemoration of the Maternity of the Blessed Virgin Mary
Today is the 20th Sunday after Pentecost in the traditional (1962) Roman calendar, marked as a Sunday of the second class. In the Vetus Ordo, or traditional form of the Roman Rite, Sundays after Pentecost constitute the longest liturgical time of the year, known as the Time after Pentecost. This liturgical season emphasizes the life of the Church under the guidance of the Holy Spirit, following the celebration of Christ’s Resurrection, Ascension, and the sending of the Paraclete at Pentecost. Sundays such as this are devoted primarily to the worship of God and the sanctification of the faithful through participation in the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass.
The 20th Sunday after Pentecost is not dedicated to the memory of a particular saint, but to the continual unfolding and growth of Christian life.
