Today, according to the traditional (1962) Roman calendar, the Church commemorates St. Anthony Mary Claret, Bishop and Confessor. Born in Catalonia, Spain, in 1807, Anthony Mary Claret became renowned for his missionary fervor, apostolic zeal, and profound devotion to the Immaculate Heart of Mary. After ordination, he dedicated himself tirelessly to preaching and evangelizing, gathering crowds with his powerful exhortations and spiritual wisdom. In 1849, he founded the Congregation of the Missionary Sons of the Immaculate Heart of Mary (the Claretians), an institute devoted to spreading the Gospel and fostering devotion to Mary. Appointed Archbishop of Santiago, Cuba, Claret undertook sweeping reforms, promoting religious education, championing the marginalized, and courageously defending the rights of the Church in the face of considerable hostility and persecution. His life was marked by mystical gifts, charitable works, and continuous opposition, especially from anti-clerical elements of his time. Returning to Spain, he served the Queen in exile and participated in the First Vatican Council; he died in exile in 1870. His feast is kept on October 23rd in the traditional Roman calendar to mark his enduring witness as a bishop and confessor, and the Church honors him today as a model of episcopal zeal, missionary spirit, and heroic fidelity amidst trials.

Brethren: The priests were numerous, because they were prevented by death from continuing in office; but Jesus, because He continues forever, has an everlasting priesthood. Therefore He is able at all times to save those who come to God through Him, since He lives always to make intercession for them. For it was fitting that we should have such a high priest, holy, innocent, undefiled, set apart from sinners, and become higher than the heavens. He does not need to offer sacrifices daily - as the other priests did - first for His own sins, and then for the sins of the people; for this latter He did once for all in offering up Himself, Jesus Christ our Lord.
