Today, according to the traditional (1962) Roman calendar, is the Feast of St. Raphael the Archangel, celebrated with the rank of III classis. St. Raphael is one of the three Archangels named in Sacred Scripture, alongside St. Michael and St. Gabriel. His most prominent appearance is in the Book of Tobit (or Tobias), where he is sent by God to aid Tobias on his journey, to heal his father Tobit's blindness, and to deliver Sarah from a demon. The story emphasizes Raphael's special role as a healer and companion, and the meaning of his name, “God heals,” reflects this. The Church has traditionally invoked St. Raphael for journeys, safe passage, healing, and protection against evil, making him a patron for travelers, the sick, and those seeking marriage. This feast was introduced into the universal calendar in the 20th century, and its placement at this time of year acknowledges Raphael’s significance alongside the feasts of St. Michael (September 29) and St. Gabriel (March 24), forming a liturgical complement to the Archangels honored by name in the Bible. The traditional calendar’s celebration of St. Raphael in late October provides the faithful with an opportunity to honor the mystery of God’s angelic messengers and to reflect on their care for humanity.
