Commemoration of Saints Denis, Rusticus and Eleutherius, Martyrs
Today, according to the traditional (1962) Roman calendar, is the feast of St John Leonardi, Confessor. Born in the 16th century in Lucca, Italy, St John Leonardi pursued the profession of pharmacy before discerning a call to the priesthood and being ordained around 1572. He became known for his zeal in reforming Christian life and doctrine during a period marked by the Counter-Reformation. His principal legacy is the founding of the Clerics Regular of the Mother of God of Lucca—also known as the Leonardine Fathers—a congregation dedicated to deepening Christian formation and spreading catechesis among the faithful, especially in response to the religious turmoil and spiritual needs of his time. St John Leonardi collaborated with St Philip Neri and played a significant role in fostering the spread of Catholic missions, contributing to the formation of an early seminary for foreign missions that would later influence the establishment of the Congregation for the Propagation of the Faith (Propaganda Fide). His spirituality was marked by humility, an ardent love for the Eucharist, devotion to the Blessed Virgin, and a tireless commitment to the reform of clergy and laity alike. The traditional Roman calendar recalls St John Leonardi on this day as a Confessor of the Faith, recognising his enduring impact on the Church during the critical years of ecclesiastical reform, and commemorates his holy death and contributions to the renewal of Christian life in a period of great challenge. Brethren: Discharging this ministry in accordance with the mercy shown us, we do not lose heart. On the contrary, we renounce those practices which shame conceals, we avoid unscrupulous conduct, we do not corrupt the word of God; but making known the truth, we commend ourselves to every man’s conscience in the sight of God. And if our Gospel also is veiled, it is veiled only to those who are perishing. In their case, the god of this world has blinded their unbelieving minds, that they should not see the light of the Gospel of the glory of Christ, Who is the image of God. For we preach not of ourselves, but Jesus Christ as Lord, and ourselves merely as your servants in Jesus.
