St Francis Borgia, Confessor

Today, in the traditional Roman calendar of 1962, is the feast of St. Francis Borgia, Confessor. St. Francis Borgia (1510–1572) was a Spanish nobleman, the great-grandson of Pope Alexander VI, who experienced a profound spiritual transformation during his life. Born into the powerful Borgia family and raised at the Spanish court, he served as Duke of Gandía, married and fathered eight children. After the death of his wife, St. Francis renounced his titles and possessions, entering the Society of Jesus, where he would become a key figure in expanding the Jesuit order throughout Europe. Renowned for his humility, deep prayer life, and administrative gifts, he eventually became the third Superior General of the Jesuits, fostering the order’s missions and emphasis on education. His sanctity was particularly manifest in his detachment from worldly honors, embrace of sacrifice, and burning desire to serve God alone. The traditional calendar keeps his feast with the rank of III class on October 10, honoring his important contribution as an exemplar of conversion and apostolic zeal for clergy, religious, and laity alike. This commemoration places St. Francis Borgia among the great confessors whose lives testify to the transforming power of divine grace and the pursuit of holiness within the world, as emphasized by the Church in the centuries following the Council of Trent and the Counter-Reformation.
