St Jerome, Priest, Confessor and Doctor of the Church

Today, according to the traditional Roman calendar of 1962, the Church honors St. Jerome—priest, confessor, and Doctor of the Church. Jerome (c. 347–420) stands as one of the greatest biblical scholars in Church history, remembered primarily for his monumental translation of the Scriptures into Latin, known as the Vulgate. Born in Dalmatia and educated in Rome, he was baptized as a young man and developed an insatiable zeal for asceticism and scholarship. After extensive travel and study, he spent significant years in the East, learning Greek and Hebrew so as to deepen his understanding of the sacred texts. St. Jerome was renowned for his sharp intellect and sometimes equally sharp tongue, but his love of Christ and dedication to the truth of the Word shone through his labors.

Jerome’s spiritual significance stems from his belief that ignorance of Scripture is ignorance of Christ—a conviction which shaped his tireless work as a teacher, translator, and commentator. He lived for many years in Bethlehem, founding a monastic community and dedicating himself to prayer, penance, and the writing of learned commentaries on nearly every book of the Bible. The traditional Roman calendar places his feast on September 30, likely the day of his death, marking the end of his earthly pilgrimage and the beginning of his heavenly reward. His title as Doctor of the Church reflects the enduring authority of his scriptural insights and his influence on Western Christianity. Maintained as a III class feast in the 1962 Missal, St. Jerome is set before the faithful as a model of both clerical learning and penitential zeal—a man who labored so that countless generations might know Christ more deeply through the Scriptures.
