This day, August 6th, is celebrated as the Feast of the Transfiguration of Our Lord Jesus Christ in the traditional 1962 Roman calendar (Vetus Ordo Missae). The feast commemorates the Gospel event in which Jesus, accompanied by Peter, James, and John, was transfigured on Mount Tabor, revealing His divine glory as His face shone like the sun and His garments became dazzling white. Moses and Elijah appeared with Him, and a voice from the cloud declared, “This is my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased; hear Him.” This revelation served both to strengthen the faith of the Apostles before Christ’s Passion and to foreshadow the glory of the Resurrection and the future glorification of Christ’s faithful. The feast was established gradually in the West; while it had ancient roots in the East, it was officially extended to the universal Church by Pope Callixtus III in 1457, as an act of thanksgiving for the Christian victory at the Siege of Belgrade. In the 1962 calendar, its date and second-class rank recall both its Christological importance and its encouragement to Christians to contemplate the glory that awaits those united to Christ. The liturgical color is white, signifying joy and light, as befits this mystery of divine glory radiating through Our Lord’s sacred humanity.
